I hate flies.
I’m sure it’s a sentiment shared by many other (probably all) equines. Some of us suffer more than others, and not everyone’s person does something about it.
My human doesn’t like the flies bothering me, and a few weeks ago she started to walk around me with this greenish yellow “pfft-pfft” thing. I turned my nose up at it. (Literally. I hate having a wet face.)
It smells all lemony and I didn’t know what got into her. Did I smell bad? Was this some kind of equine deodorant? Should I feel insulted?
Turns out the smelly stuff wasn’t to cover any unpleasant smells. (I do not stink, thank you very much.) It took a while, but I realized that every time she sprayed it on me, the flies didn’t like me much.
It does wear off, especially since I can’t resist rolling in the dirt the second I get into the field, but the spots where I can’t cover myself in dust and mud (the inside of my legs, my belly, between my forelegs, etc) do get bitten much less.
I still don’t like it when my face gets wet, and I won’t let her spray me (especially not my ears!), but she keeps getting around it by spraying it on a cloth and then wiping it into my ears (ewww!) and all over my face.
Still, I no longer eye the stuff with apprehension and let her put it on all those awkward places without giving her trouble.
If your person is looking for something to keep the flies off you, this stuff is a good choice.
